Our E3 Predictions

With E3, one of the largest gaming conferences in the world almost upon us (June 6-9). We thought that we’d share our predictions of what will happen in each of the main three press conferences (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo), and any other news that we here at Scott is Always Right have been waiting for.

Scott:

Sony has been the king of exclusive titles this year and E3 should be an attempt by Sony to continue that. With great games like Twisted Metal, Uncharted 3, inFAMOUS 2, and The Last Guardian, Sony is doing well for games. What I’d like to see from Sony is more reasons to purchase a Move. I’d like to see a wide spread amount of hardcore and casual games coming out for it. More hardcore integration would be nice, but Move exclusive hardcore titles would be better. I also can’t wait to see the NGP. I’m even more excited to hear a reasonable price point.

The Nintendo line-up is anyone’s guess. Last year Nintendo shocked fans with loads of new first party titles and quality in all of them. The one problem is now they  may have temporarily exhausted their first party for a while. Skyward Sword looked a bit flimsy last year but hopefully they have fixed the technical issues. Project Café is also something I’ll be watching for when their conference kicks off. Let’s just hope the vitality sensor will remain a thing of the past.

A reason to play Kinect would be wonderful from Microsoft. There are games out there, but not nearly enough to have it always pulled out. Microsoft and Sony will be fighting on similar grounds on that respect. After Sony’s line-up destroyed Microsoft’s 2011 line-up I hope that Microsoft can come out this year with a strong 2012 set list. I want loads of new and old IPs that make me excited like Sony did last year.

Who doesn’t want Battlefront 3 ? I’ve been crossing my fingers for this games for what seems like forever. If Lucas Arts can go out and announce I’ll be a very happy man. I’ll also be on the watch for Rage, Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2 (not announced but hoping), The Old Republic,  and maybe if we’re really good we’ll get to see a new Grand Theft Auto.

Blake:

With the recent PSN outage distracting Sony from E3, there hasn’t been a lot of talk about what they’ll bring to their press conference. My bet is that they will rely heavily on the NGP, their new phone/portable gaming console. It sports impressive specs and promises for epic titles like Killzone and LittleBigPlanet. They will also probably focus on their “welcome back” program for Playstaion Network users and how they have rebuilt it to be safer and more user friendly in order to keep their customers. As for games, I’m especially excited to see Uncharted 3. We might see a few PSP titles and Sony exclusives, but they’ll probably focus more on their new hardware first. Catch Sony’s conference Monday at 5 pm PST.

Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial rock, you’ve probably heard about Nintendo’s new console. Our old pals Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime will officially show their shiny new system first during their conference. More than likely, Nintendo will show their new hardware and launch titles as well as future titles. The appearance of new Mario and Zelda titles is pretty much inevitable, but who’s complaining about that? Given the lackluster sales and launch titles of the 3DS, they’ll try to bolster their new system with big name games like Mario 3DS and the N64 remakes Ocarina of Time and Star Fox. I’m looking forward to new Skyward Sword and Mario 3DS details, but I’m most looking forward to their new console. If you ask me, a new Console race is about to begin. Check out Nintendo’s Conference on Tuesday at 9 am PST.

Microsoft’s lineup is a little harder to call this year. Without any new hardware planned, they will probably rely on their software and Kinect sales to stay competitive. Though with all this pretty new hardware coming, I wouldn’t rule out a surprise from Microsoft. I think they’ll at least announce development on a new gaming console or something of the like. Other than that, they’ll focus on big-name titles like Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3 and Modern Warfare 3 (that’s a lot of threequals.) They’ll also probably talk about the sales of the Kinect and debut some new titles for it. But we’ll see what Microsoft has in store during their press conference on Monday at 9:30 am PST.

The rest of the show will be devoted to big games. We’ll definitely see Modern Warfare 3, which was announced only in the past week. Bioware will show off Mass Effect 3, one of the more anticipated games of this year and maybe bring their new MMO The Old Republic into the mix. Of course, we can’t get past this E3 without seeing Duke Nukem Forever in action since it’s been a couple decades since it was announced. Blizzard will be there with the new Starcraft 2 game, Heart of the Swarm, and will Diablo 3 ready to show as well (both of which I’m extremely excited about.) Another personal favorite, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim details will be announced and maybe we’ll even see some gameplay. Big companies like Capcom and Square Enix will also be there to show off something new.

This year’s E3 is going to be exciting for sure. With a new console and a ton of great new games coming out, the gaming world won’t be disappointed. E3 2011 kicks off on Monday, June 6.

Myles:

Sony has a huge line-up of games for E3 this year including inFAMOUS 2, and Uncharted 3. Personally I am going to be looking out for Infamous 2. With the new ability to gain fire, or ice powers depending on your morality, and gameplay choices. These new powers will definitely enhance both the combat and exploration segments of the game.

Nintendo has the potential for a strong year. With games like Skyward Sword and their new console there’s plenty to be excited about. The only thing that is bothering me is the hype surrounding Project Café, because if it can’t live up to the hype people, me included, will me most displeased.

I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft will be talking about Kinect again, not that I will enjoy them talking about it. However Forza 4 is definitely a game I’ll be watching for.

Personally I’d also like to see an announcement of some sort about the much rumoured GTA 5, even though it’s probably to close after the release of L.A. Noire for Rockstar to be developing a new game. I’m also expecting to here news about Dice’s Battlefield 3, and id’s Rage, both of which are (hopefully) become the leaders of the FPS genre. Of course I’d also be lying if I said I wasn’t looking out for both Mass Effect 3 and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

This years E3 is definitely looking like it’s going to be a good show, so I can’t wait until the 7th.
